General AI
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Key distinction

Raw trained models are unpredictable. Fine-tuning with human feedback (RLHF) teaches the model to give helpful, harmless, and honest responses. This is what separates the AI assistant you talk to from the raw base model.

When you type a prompt, the model processes your input, generates output token by token based on probability distributions, and streams the response back. There's no lookup table, no database of answers — it's calculating the most statistically likely continuation of your text.
This matters because it explains why AI can be confidently wrong. The model doesn't "know" things the way you know things — it generates what statistically follows from your prompt. When it hallucinates a fake court case or a non-existent study, it's not lying. It's completing a pattern with a plausible-sounding continuation that happens to be false.
